Accommodation
Student houses
Student rooms are located in the vicinity of the Ruhr-University. The Academic Support Group (AKAFÖ) offers apartments and rooms from EUR 272,- to EUR 438,- per month. Furthermore there is the possibility to rent a room in a private hostel. The living expenses amount to approximately EUR 900,- to 1000,- per month in total.
Most student houses have long waiting lists (6-12 months) so that we recommend to apply there as early as possible, at best parallel to applying for our master programme.
If you receive a room offer, you must contact the administrative staff of the student houses, and they will tell you what they need from you for a binding room reservation. If you do not get admitted to MSS, your application for accommodation will be rejected automatically.
As soon as you know your exact arrival in Bochum, make an appointment with your future landlord to sign your rental contract immediately after your arrival and move into your new home.
If you want to change your accommodation later, you must cancel your contract. Cancellation periods can differ but are, as a rule, 1-3 months in advance. Some student houses only accept semester-wise cancellations. Therefore, please check the cancellation period of your contract, and if you are unsure about it, ask a German to translate that for you.
The student union AKAFÖ offers apartments and single rooms in 18 different student houses.

Please note: The AKAFÖ will send you a confirmation after you registered. Afterwards, you will get sent a link via E-mail on a regular basis to check whether you’re still interested in a room. Be mindful of the fact that if you do not react to the link within a timely fashion, you will be removed from the waiting list. However, the application is only a registration and does not guarantee that you will get a room at AKAFÖ. As soon as there is a room available for you, the AKAFÖ will reach out to you with an offer.
There are several private student houses and you have to apply for each separately. You can usually apply online. Most forms are in German. If you don’t understand German, call the contact person or write them an email. The application is only a registration and does not guarantee that you will get a room at the student house you applied at. Please call them one or two days after you registered and ask whether you will have a chance to get a room.
